We woke pretty early, not long after sunrise so I could take a pretty picture of pink skies from our verandah.
We were earlier for breakfast this morning but it was basically a repeat of yesterday except Neil had fried eggs instead of poached 🙂
We walked around the Rock Harbor area , mainly to fill in time until we checked out and could head down to the dock. We watched a crowd of people board the Voyager II Ferry for their 2 hour boat trip to Grand Portage in Minnesota.
We’d been advised to leave our bags in the room and they would be collected and delivered to the seaplane dock in time for our ride out at 11am. We were asked to be at the dock a half hour before hand – and were in time to see two seaplanes arrive.
The passengers were all ready and the planes … but our bags were a no show! The pilot wasn’t too worried but Neil headed back to the lodge checkin to see if he could find what had become of them.
Eventually the bags showed up and we could set off for our return trip to the mainland. Neil scored the best seat at the front again but this time there were a total of 7 of us on the flight plus the pilot. The plane was alittle larger but I was jampacked in a row with two LARGE american women – it was a squeezy ride back across the lake this time! However, I had a window seat so could take a few more pictures.
It was funny when half way across my Apple watch suddenly started buzzing with notifications – we were back in the land of phone access! After roughly 45 minutes we could see the river of Houghton below us and we were heading down to land.
We said goodbye and thanks to our pilot and found the car. We set out heading south and about thirty minutes down the road we made a short detour to see the Old Victoria Restoration Site – restored homes of copper miners.
The drive down took us through some very pretty North Woods country, and some of the leaves are already on the turn – the Fall is not far away.
It wasn’t long before we crossed the border into Wisconsin, our tenth state!
In the lakeside town of Minocqua we passed another spot that pays tribute to the muthical paul bunyan and Babe, a roadside restaurant this time!
With so many lakes, fishing is a huge business in this art of the country, we even saw a “Big Fisherman”!
Finally we arrived in Wausau, Minnesota and checked in to the Hampton Inn. We had gained an hour heading south so we had some time to fill in before dinner – so of course we went to Walmart! We’re running low on snacks. For dinner we walked up to the local Applebees, my favourite restaurant chain in the USA ( the first time for this trip!). It’s a low key sports bar and grill, so we watched American football on the Tv screens and enjoyed some tasty appetizers followed by a delicios steak for me and ribs for Neil. Tomorrow we head to Minnesota!
