Moose!

The sound of the water lapping under the verandah was lovely to wake up to this morning. We had a relaxed start and were too late for breakfast in the main restaurant as it only runs til 8.30. However, they serve breakfast until 10am at the cafe next door so we tucked into our eggs and bacon there enjoying the sunshine on the bay.

After breakfast we set off to do the 4 mike walk out to Scoville Point which is at the tip of the peninsula. It’s mostly level but covers a real variation in ground. In some places we were scrambling over rocks, several times we had to cross plank bridges across wetlands and some of it was on pretty paths through the woods. The water is never far away, breezy and choppy on the Lake Superior side, but smooth and gentle on the inlet side.It was a lovely walk, took us about 2 1/2 hours.

We relaxed in the room for a while, processing some photos and typing up the details for our blogs before we decided to go for a walk down to the plane dock. As we headed down there we passed the trailhead for the trail going down to Tobin harbor and we were accosted by three excited ladies who were just coming off the trail… “there’s a moose down there!” they said. Obe thing i’d really hoped for from this trip was to see a moose, but realistically I thought it was unlikely. So you can imagine how excited I was to hear that there was a moose a short way down the trail…we headed off and sure enough only a few hundred feet down we saw him… a bull moose, relaxing off the left handside in the woods. He was sitting down but there was no mistaking those massive antlers! We stayed there quietly for a while taking some photos and were able to alert some other trail walkers as they came past.

After seeing the big guy we wandered down to the seaplane dock where it was very quiet in between plane arrivals and then we headed back to our room to have a quiet sit and a coffee. While we were there the Voyageaur II Boat came past on her regular route to and fom the island.

By now we were getting pretty hungry so we headed down to the Grill to relax on their verandah and have a couple of drinks and a burger. For our appetizer tonight we enjoyed a Miners Pasty – you see advertisements all over the U.P. for Pasties. They were brought here by the Cornish miners who came to work in the many copper mines up here and the locals love them. Ours tasted very authentic!

While we ejoyed dinner we tried to remeber how many of the American national parks we’ve visited and tried to compare Isle Royale to the others. It’s been a unique experience and I’ so glad we came
