College Fjord – Last Day of the Cruise

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

It was nice to have a slow start to the day today. The ship would be cruising north long the Gulf of Alaska and then into Prince William Sound around late morning. In the later afternoon we would enter College Fjord for the really scenic part of the day.
We were glad to have a lazy morning to catch up on our blogs and enjoy the sunshine that was shining today. A nice breakfast in the Lido to start the day.

At 10am there was a talk and presentation in the Main Stage Theatre about WWII in Alaska which we were both interested to see. The speaker was excellent and even Neil learned some WWII facts that he had not previously known. Particularly about the very fierce battle that took place in the Aleutian Islands after the Japanese had invaded them. The talk was popular, lots of people interested.

After the talk we relaxed at the Seaview deck for a while and watch the land growing closer as we entered Prince William Sound. We strolled around up on the Panorama deck. After that we spent some time packing up all our clothes etc ready to disembark tomorrow. We also called my Dad at home to wish him a very happy Fathers Day.

Eventually we entered College Fjord – The fjord cuts 40 kilometers into the heart of the rugged Chugach Mountains and contains five tidewater glaciers (glaciers that terminate in water), five large valley glaciers, and dozens of smaller glaciers. The fjord was named in 1898 by an expedition team that opted to give the glaciers lining College Fjord and their neighbor, Harriman Glacier, the names of Ivy League and other prominent Eastern universities — hence, Harvard, Vassar, Williams, Yale, and so on.

It was a stunning cruise up the fjord in the bright sunshine. Yesterday in Glacier Bay was fabulous but today was equally if not more spectacular.

We were pretty tired and it was fairly late in the day so we decided on a quick dinner in the buffet before a final celebratory end-of-cruise bubbly in the Ocean bar

Tomorrow we start the next pahse of the trip!
