Well the good weather deserted us today. The rain was persistent overnight and we put our raincoats on to go down to breakfast, which this time we are inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We needed to call the golf cart to collect us and our luggage and we had a drier ride than expected as the cart was equipped with wrap around plastic walls. The driver first took us down to the car to unload our bags, and then back to reception for a friendly checkout. We were given a gift of Greek sweets to take away with us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trip to Heraklion took about 50 minutes, through constant rain, but the views of the coast were very good despite the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the airport we struck a bit of a traffic jam as roads converged but we eventually reached the Anna Cars dock where we were greeted warmly and sent on our way to the terminal with a friendly farewell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were a bit daunted by the crowds in the departures hall, but on further inspection we could see that the long queues were for the low cost airlines. When we found the Aegean desks we were relieved to find them almost deserted.  We had a bit of a wait as the flight was initially delayed by 30 minutes for boarding and we then sat on the tarmac for an extra 20 minutes. They earned there might be turbulence due to the weather but it was quite a smooth flight and we landed in Athens about 50 minutes behind schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily our rental car company were monitoring flights and communicated with us as soon as we touched down. We linked up with their shuttle driver who took us to their offsite office for the paperwork. I’d booked with Athens Car Rental who gets great reviews and are a lot cheaper than the big chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cat seems very new, it’s a Leap Motors sUV and is very comfortable. Finally we were on the road again and heading south for the 45 minutes drive to Sounio. We’re staying at the Aegeon Beach Resort, which would be extra lovely in fine weather but was looking a bit bedraggled when we arrived in the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a short struggle trying to work out how to open the boot we finally checked in and then drove straight back out again to collect Erin who is staying in another hotel a minutes drive up the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was lovely to see her! We caught up over a cuppa in our room and then went down to the restaurant for drinks and dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hadn’t expected to see a sunset tonight but the clouds cleared enough to give us a bit of a show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner was excellent, we shared cold Greek dios and had another delicious calamari dish for entree. I had a Gamopilafo, a traditional Greek wedding dish, with milk-fed lamb served on a wonderful creamy lemon flavoured risotto. It was so good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During dinner we were also.visited by an extremely friendly little cat. He leapt into.my lap without any encouragement and purred and made himself at home. When I  put him down he leapt into Erin’s lap!  Definitely the cheekiest Greek kitty we have met so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also had a great view up to Sounios mainsight, the lovely Temple of Poseidon which stands high on a hill looking out over the Aegean sea and our hotel. We had planned to visit it this afternoon but have decided to go in the morning when, hopefully , the weather will be better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we drove Erin back up the hill we had a good view of the temple, beautifully lit at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
